University: University of Utah, Salt Lake City

Major: Psychology
Home country: France

Florian is a Psychology major at the University of Utah.  Florian chose to study at the U because it was the right fit for him. After studying at an out-of-state university, Florian decided to come back to Utah and has enjoyed his time here ever since.

When Florian first arrived at the U, he met a student in his program who soon became a mentor. His mentor was in the same psychology program and helped him become more involved on campus. Florian’s mentor told him how to become a student research assistant and the many ways to get involved in his community. Additionally, he learned about the Honors College. Florian’s mentor motivated him to apply to the Honors College. At first, he was nervous because the classes were smaller and he is a shy person. However, his experience in the Honors College has been transformative. Since he began taking classes at the Honors College, Florian feels more comfortable participating in his classes. Also, his professors in the Honors College have helped him become open and conscious to new ideas and the many ways humans interact. He has learned how to link the knowledge learned in the classroom to his everyday life.

Currently, Florian is a College of Social and Behavioral Science (CSBS) Ambassador and serves as a mentor to students in his program. Additionally, Florian works as a student research assistant with at risk youth, volunteers his time at the Children’s Center, and helps new incoming international students become acquainted and comfortable with their new home and surroundings in Utah as an International Ambassador and iMentor.

After graduating, he hopes to obtain his PhD is counseling psychology. Florian plans on continuing to give back to his community through his research and working with youth.

Florian is passionate about psychology and enjoys learning about human interaction and changes in behavior. Florian enjoys the beauty of the U campus and the proximity to the mountains. Furthermore, Florian is impressed by the kindness and honesty of students and members from the community in Salt Lake City.

In his free time, Florian enjoys running—particularly in the mountains. Running has taught Florian that he can push himself and become stronger. Florian has gained mental and physical strength and has learned to not give up and to have balance in his life. Also, Florian likes to meet with his friends and relax.

Florian is passionate about college. Florian believes that in addition to the great learning that takes place in the classroom, college can help one become more open-minded and tolerant. Also, he believes a lot of learning takes place outside the classroom and from peers. Individuals on campus can be great examples and impact ones perspective on life.
