2012 Inaugural International Center Scholarship Recipient
University: University of Utah, Salt Lake City
Education level: Senior
Major: Biology and International Studies with an emphasis in Global Health
Home country: South Korea
Chulwoo is double majoring in Biology and International Studies with an emphasis in global health at the University of Utah. Although Chulwoo considered other universities, he decided to study at the University of Utah because of the well-known Biology program.
After graduating, Chulwoo plans to attend graduate school on the east coast for Public Health. Ideally, he would like to work with the World Health Organization in Africa or Asia. Chulwoo is a student who is passionate about serving others and taking advantage of every opportunity the University of Utah has to offer. Chulwoo appreciates that the University of Utah provides various activities for students to get involved academically and in the community. For instance, Chulwoo, through the Center for Learning Abroad, has studied in Ghana and Thailand. Additionally, he has participated in Alternative Spring Break through the Bennion Center. His extracurricular experiences through the University of Utah have helped solidify his passion for serving others.
In his free time, Chulwoo participates with the Korean-American Scientist and Engineers Association (KSEA) and teaches Korean to second-generation Korean students to help students stay in touch with their heritage, culture, and identity. Also, he enjoys salsa dancing and enjoys watching thriller movies.
Chulwoo enjoys challenging himself and overcome obstacles. For instance, while studying abroad in Ghana, Chulwoo was the only South Korean in a group of 25 American students. He was worried about his English and making friends. However, he challenged himself to make friends with his classmates and talk with them as much as he could. By challenging himself, Chulwoo learned to overcome his shyness and had a life-changing experience serving the community in Ghana.
Chulwoo plans to continue serving his community by not only working in the public health sector, but also sharing his experiences of the importance of doing well in school, staying focused, and to be active and passionate during student’s experiences at the University of Utah.
Chulwoo would like to thank his Teaching Assistant in his Political Science course that told him about this scholarship. Because of this scholarship, Chulwoo has gained confidence in his hard work and feels happiness that he was chosen as a recipient of the International Center Scholarship.
