2017 Scholarship Recipients

SU RIN CHOI

Su Rin comes from a Korean family, although she was actually born in Bad Soden, a small town near Frankfurt, Germany. She was raised in Thailand, Germany, and in South Korea, so her experience growing up was very diverse, and global in perspective.

Su Rin chose Psychology as her major, because of her love of working with people. Because of her travels and her previous experiences living abroad, she developed strong English skills which allowed her to do a lot of volunteer work in Korea, helping to tutor those who are learning English as a second language. Su Rin has served as a peer mentor at the Utah Asia Campus as well as a student leader of the student-run volunteer organization for Bakmun Girls’ High School.

During her free time, Su Rin enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, trekking, and exercising. Watching great movies/ shows, coloring, and listening to music are some of her favorite activities. One special thing about her is that she loves going grocery shopping and buying healthy wholefoods.

MINH PHAM

Minh Pham is a Computer Science student and Mathematics minor from Viet Nam. Minh is passionate about technology that makes life, research, and business easier. She joined the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute (SCI) of the University of Utah as an intern to develop a database project. Before working at SCI, she was a research assistant at Department of Health, Kinesiology, and Recreation to build an interactive map to display the research’s data. Besides working on her technical skills, Minh found it enjoyable and meaningful to serve as a member of International Ambassador team since 2015. It helped her connect with others and their cultures. Minh’s experience at the U taught her to be forgiving to her failures, open-minded to new ideas and persistent when it came to achieving her dream. Minh would love to encourage students to explore possibilities at the University of Utah, as well as joining the International Ambassador team and the international community, a place where one can find amazing friends. 

HEILLY ZENITH GALVEZ

Heilly comes from Panama City, Panama, where she discovered her passion for chemistry and competed in international chemistry olympiads. At the University of Utah, she is a Junior in the Chemical Engineering program and is completing a minor in Computer Science. She’s passionate about ways in which these two fields can intersect. Outside of the classroom, Heilly is an undergraduate researcher and serves as Vice-president of the National Society of Black Engineers chapter at the U. She’s had the opportunity to inspire an underrepresented, multicultural group to peruse engineering careers.  She spent last summer in Münster, Germany, were she interned in a chemical engineering laboratory studying the viscoelasticity of materials for solar cells. Heilly is excited to accept this award that will help fund her education and further involvement in the international campus community.
