The International Student and Scholar Services provides orientation for all new international students, including graduate, undergraduate, Learning Abroad exchange students, and those participating in other short-term exchange programs. All new University of Utah students who will study on an F-1 or J-1 student visa, as well as any students who have been unenrolled for three or more semesters, are required to attend International Student Orientation.

This orientation has been designed specifically for international students, and covers very important information about maintaining visa status, safety and wellness resources, tips for cultural adjustment, and much more. Other orientations on campus, including New Student Orientation, do NOT fulfill this requirement. Failure to complete the International Student Orientation requirements (see Steps 1-4 below) will prevent class registration, collection of transcripts, and can also result in SEVIS record termination.

Please visit our Frequently Asked Questions page or email us at with any questions or concerns.

Most international Exchange Visitors on the J-1 visa (e.g., research scholars and visiting faculty) are not required to attend International Student Orientation, but they do have the option to attend the Exchange Visitor Orientation. J-1 Exchange Visitors in the “student” category are required to attend International Student orientation with ISSS.
